Uruguayan Senate honors National Convention of Workers on 60th anniversary
The Uruguayan Senate held a ceremony to honor the National Convention of Workers (CNT) on its 60th anniversary, marking its founding on October 1, 1966. The event was convened by former SUNCA general secretary Oscar Andrade and attended by various political leaders, union officials, and representatives from social organizations.
During the session, Senator Oscar Andrade reflected on the long history of the Uruguayan labor movement, noting that the CNT's founders viewed their work as the legacy of a century of struggle, sacrifice, and ethical militancy. He highlighted the historical roots of labor organization in the country, dating back to 19th-century mutual aid societies and early strikes, such as the Cuñapirú strike in Rivera.
The ceremony included participation from the PIT-CNT Executive Secretariat, led by President Marcelo Abdala, as well as ministers of Labor and Education and Culture. Other attendees included representatives from the University of the Republic, the BPS, and delegations of families of the disappeared.
