US Air Force doubles F-15EX fighter jet order to 267 aircraft

The United States Air Force has significantly expanded its procurement program for the Boeing F-15EX Eagle II, increasing the total order from 129 to 267 aircraft. These modernized fourth-generation fighters are intended to replace aging F-15E Strike Eagles, a role that was originally designated for the F-35 stealth fighter.

Despite the expansion, the Pentagon has raised concerns regarding rising costs and technical complexities. Each unit is priced at approximately $94 million, leading to uncertainty regarding the total program budget. Additionally, the program faces logistical hurdles, including supply chain shortages for critical components such as GE engines, Elbit cockpit displays, and Collins Aerospace ejection system cartridges.

There is also a strategic risk that essential parts may go out of production before the full fleet is completed, which could necessitate expensive technical redesigns. This decision comes even as the military shifts its broader strategic focus toward fifth-generation stealth technology and future sixth-generation combat aircraft.
