US Air Force loses 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones in Iran operations

The United States Air Force has reportedly lost 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones during military operations against Iran. If these figures are accurate, the loss represents approximately one-quarter of the total Reaper fleet. With individual units estimated to cost between $30 million and $50 million, the total financial damage could exceed $1.3 billion.

Losses have reportedly increased throughout 2026. The vulnerability of the MQ-9 is attributed to its lower speed and flight altitude compared to advanced jet fighters, making it a more accessible target for modern air defense networks.

Recently, Iranian state media claimed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps utilized a sophisticated new defense system to down a Reaper over Hormozgan Province. This area is strategically significant due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy exports and trade.
