US‑Iran aerial losses and US munitions shortages

Entities: United States · Iran · United States Air Force · F-15E Strike Eagle · Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

Overview

Since the start of the Epic Fury campaign in late February 2026, Iran has claimed the destruction of a large number of U.S. MQ‑9 Reaper drones. By late May, Iranian officials reported between 41 and 42 Reapers shot down, reducing the U.S. combat‑ready fleet to roughly 135 aircraft. The attrition rate represents the most severe loss of the Reaper fleet in a single conflict.

In early August, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) publicly displayed captured U.S. and Israeli air assets, including a largely intact MQ‑9 Reaper, wreckage of a U.S. F‑15E Strike Eagle shot down on 3 April, and an Israeli Hermes 900 UAV. The IRGC presented these items as propaganda trophies and announced intentions to reverse-engineer the technology for domestic use.

This exhibition of captured hardware coincides with reports of significant munitions shortages in the United States. During the first month of Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. deployed over 850 Tomahawk cruise missiles and more than 1,000 Patriot and THAAD interceptors. The global Patriot missile inventory has reportedly dropped from approximately 2,200 to fewer than 827. In response, Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg has ordered defense contractors to submit accelerated production plans within 21 days, with the Pentagon establishing framework agreements with companies such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to increase production of critical interceptor systems like the PAC-3.
