U.S. Air Force to double F-15EX Eagle II fighter jet fleet
The U.S. Air Force is significantly expanding its fleet of Boeing F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets, planning to increase the total number from 129 to 267 aircraft. This strategic investment aims to bridge proven combat-tested airpower with emerging 21st-century technologies.
Unlike previous F-15 variants focused primarily on air superiority, the F-15EX is designed as a versatile platform capable of both air-to-air combat and heavy ground-attack missions. The aircraft features an open digital backbone, advanced radar, and a payload capacity described as unmatched by other fighters.
Units such as the 142nd Wing in Portland are currently transitioning from the F-15C/D to the F-15EX, requiring specialized pilot training and new mission curricula. Recent testing has successfully demonstrated the aircraft's ability to deploy various munitions, including Mk 82 and Mk 84 bombs, alongside advanced sensor pods.
