US‑Iran Conflict Escalates with Ninth Night of Airstrikes and New US Casualties
The United States carried out a ninth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iran, targeting military command centres, air‑defence and coastal‑surveillance sites, missile‑ and drone‑launch facilities and communications networks to further diminish Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM said the operation began at 02:00 GMT on 20 July. Iran responded with drone and ballistic‑missile attacks on U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain and Syria, and reported explosions in several Iranian cities.
U.S. casualties have risen: two service members were killed in Jordan, a third died in northern Iraq while a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone was carried out, and one more service member remains missing. The total U.S. death toll since the war began on 28 February is now 17. President Donald Trump said the strikes were “very hard” and would make Iran “pay many times over” in honour of the fallen troops. The cease‑fire collapse and the attacks have pushed oil prices higher and heightened fears of a broader regional war.
