US and Iran engage in diplomatic negotiations to resolve conflict

United States and Iran are engaged in complex negotiations to resolve ongoing tensions and ensure the flow of energy resources through the Strait of Hormuz. US Vice President JD Vance described the situation as being in the "midgame" of a strategic contest, noting that the US is utilizing diplomatic, economic, and military methods to achieve its objectives. Vance emphasized that the US aims to see oil and gas output in the Gulf return to pre-conflict levels and expects Iran to commit to not firing upon commercial vessels.

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, stated that the only effective strategy to end the US-Iran conflict is through diplomatic channels. This follows reports that US military options have been exhausted and ammunition reserves are depleted. Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that Washington might sign a 30-to-60-day ceasefire agreement with Iran as early as this week.

However, challenges remain as Iranian officials have suggested the Strait of Hormuz may not reopen unless the US corrects its behavior.
