US launches tenth consecutive night of attacks on Iran

The United States has carried out a series of nightly airstrikes against Iran, reaching a tenth consecutive night as of 20 July 2026. The operations, announced by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), target Iranian military command centers, air‑defence sites, missile‑ and drone‑launch facilities and coastal‑surveillance installations with the stated goal of degrading Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The campaign follows a wave of U.S. casualties: two service members were killed in Jordan and a third died while disposing of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq, bringing the confirmed U.S. death toll to 16 and leaving one soldier missing. President Donald Trump has vowed “many‑times‑over” retaliation, describing the latest strikes as “hard‑hit” in honour of the fallen troops.

Iran has responded with attacks on U.S. bases in Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Syria and other regional locations, employing ballistic missiles and drones. Iranian state media reports that two oil tankers exploded while attempting to transit the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz, and that civilian infrastructure in several Iranian coastal cities was hit. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps claims to have targeted U.S. aircraft and transport hubs in Jordan and Bahrain.

The heightened hostilities have also drawn in Iran‑aligned Houthi forces in Yemen, which announced a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia, further threatening the Bab al‑Mandab and Red Sea shipping lanes. The conflict now threatens regional stability and global oil‑transport routes.
