US and Iran escalate conflict with tanker and military base strikes

The United States and Iran have engaged in a significant escalation of maritime and military strikes. The US military’s Central Command reported destroying five Iranian oil tankers in response to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeting a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that for every attempt to hit US naval ships, Iran will lose tankers.

In retaliation, the IRGC claimed to have fired on US vessels and oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, an area Iran has declared off-limits. The IRGC also reported a ballistic missile attack on a US-supported base near Al Azraq in Jordan. Maritime security agencies have reported merchant ships being struck by disabling fire in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Gulf, with reports of a vessel listing near Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates.

Adding to the tension, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi claimed that Iranian forces destroyed the US 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. This statement followed comments from Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao regarding damage sustained at a key Middle East base. Iran has also issued threats against oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports.
