US-Iran military escalation triggers regional strikes and economic turmoil

Military tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated following a series of retaliatory strikes. U.S. Central Command reported conducting strikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities, including air-defense sites, radar installations, and maritime assets, in response to attempted Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and U.S. personnel in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran responded with a wave of missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military assets in Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, and Bahrain. In Jordan, air defenses intercepted 13 ballistic missiles, with 10 destroyed and three crashing in unpopulated areas. The conflict has also triggered global economic concerns, including volatility in bond markets and rising jet fuel prices.

Domestically, Iran faces severe economic strain. President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that the population is reaching its limit due to U.S. economic warfare and sanctions. The Iranian rial hit a record low of 2.25 million per US dollar on September 5, and the government is planning to double gasoline prices and reduce consumption limits to manage the energy crisis.
