US and Iran exchange military strikes near Strait of Hormuz
The United States and Iran have engaged in direct military strikes following tensions near the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that US forces bombed multiple locations along the southern Iranian coast, including civilian sites. In response, the IRGC stated they have begun retaliating, claiming the downing of an American MQ-9 drone, which they identified as the 50th of its kind lost by the US military.
US President Donald Trump stated that the strikes were a response to failed Iranian attempts to plant naval mines in the Strait and were justified by Iran targeting a US military base in Jordan with eight missiles. US Central Command confirmed the commencement of strikes against IRGC targets within Iran.
Amid the escalation, US Vice President JD Vance claimed that Gulf partners, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, are working secretly to help isolate Iran and ensure the country pays for targeting commercial vessels. Vance also suggested that Turkey and Azerbaijan are unofficially supporting US efforts to pressure Iran through economic means.
