Iran threatens military escalation in Strait of Hormuz

Iran has signaled a shift from a defensive to a “fully offensive” military strategy following the expiration of a 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States. A senior Iranian official warned that if the U.S. does not fully implement the terms of the interim peace deal within a few weeks, Tehran is prepared to launch a “timely and precise” military attack to break the American naval blockade.

The deadlock centers on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where disputes over management and control have caused the agreement to unravel. While the MoU aimed to provide a ceasefire and address nuclear concerns, tensions have escalated as Iran maintains that the waterway will not reopen until the U.S. adheres to the deal.

In response, U.S. President Donald Trump has maintained a hardline stance, stating that Iran “should put up the white flag of surrender” and reiterating that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons is a primary goal. Additionally, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned of unprecedented economic isolation for Iran, as leadership in Tehran expresses concern that mounting economic pressure could trigger domestic unrest.
