Iran and US escalate maritime conflict in the Persian Gulf

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply in the Persian Gulf following a series of maritime strikes. US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that its forces targeted three Iranian oil tankers, including one near Kharg Island and another in the Gulf of Oman. One vessel, the MT Kilo, reportedly sank following the engagement. The US military stated these actions were in response to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launching ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and a Navy destroyer, though the US reported that the missiles missed their targets and no personnel were injured.

In retaliation, the IRGC claimed to have targeted three Iranian tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and three US-linked vessels in other parts of the region. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned that the era of proportional responses has ended, stating that future attacks on Iranian interests would be met with faster, heavier, and more painful reactions.

Additionally, Iran's National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei announced plans to establish a new restricted zone near the Strait of Hormuz, which would extend from the US naval blockade line into sectors of the Persian Gulf. Any vessel entering this zone could face sanctions. The conflict has shifted from purely military engagements to economic warfare, with both nations utilizing maritime blockades and sanctions to exert pressure.
