US and Japan call for strategic alignment against regional threats
During the annual Fuji Dialogue forum in Tokyo, high-ranking US and Japanese officials emphasized the need for closer security coordination to counter regional instability and China's growing influence. US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau urged Japan to align its national defense tactics with US strategy, specifically highlighting the importance of deterrence along the ‘first island chain’—a strategic line spanning from Japanese islands through Taiwan to the Philippines.
At the forum, Yoshihide Yoshida, President of the National Defense Academy of Japan, outlined three non-negotiable strategic principles to address security threats. These include defending the first island chain, ensuring the United States maintains a nuclear deterrent advantage over China, and preserving Western technological superiority, particularly in artificial intelligence.
Participants also expressed concerns regarding China's rapid and opaque expansion of its nuclear arsenal and its increasingly aggressive rhetoric toward Japan. Discussions noted that while personal interactions between US and Chinese leadership may fluctuate, the fundamental nature of the US-China relationship remains unchanged. The dialogue underscored a collective push for increased defense spending and enhanced regional resilience among allies including the US, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia.
