US and UK Foreign Secretaries Meet on European and Ukrainian Security

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband met at the State Department on 5 August. They emphasized the need for a stronger European role in continental security and placed the situation in Ukraine on the agenda.

Both officials reiterated London's commitment to support Kyiv, including calls for additional anti‑aircraft missiles, and stressed that Ukraine's security is linked to European and trans‑Atlantic stability.

The discussion also covered safe navigation of the Strait of Hormuz, reaffirming a joint stance that Iran must not develop or acquire nuclear weapons, and highlighted the importance of opening the strait to ease the UK's cost‑of‑living pressures.

Miliband said he would raise the humanitarian crisis in Gaza with Rubio and is scheduled to meet World Bank President Ajay Banga during his brief stay in Washington.
