US Army awards $12.9M contract for Scorpion Light mortar integration
The US Army has awarded a $12.9 million contract to Global Military Products (GMP) to integrate the Scorpion Light 81 mm Mobile Mortar Systems onto the Infantry Squad Vehicle–Utility (ISV-U). The system, known in Europe as Alakran and developed by the Spanish company NTGS, is designed to provide responsive forward indirect fire support for new Mobile Brigade Combat Teams (MBCTs).
The Scorpion Light system allows a vehicle to halt, automatically deploy the mortar, fire eight rounds, and relocate in under two minutes. This configuration aims to maximize the speed and agility of light infantry while reducing crew workload through advanced digital fire control architecture. The integration will utilize US Army digital fire control technologies and government-furnished M253 mortar barrels.
The contract was issued under the Department of Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC) Other Transaction Authority (OTA). This effort follows two years of collaboration, including Soldier Enhancement Program (SEP) initiatives and Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) efforts to refine the system based on direct soldier feedback.
