US Army Extends Humvee Production as JLTV Delays Persist

The US Army has awarded AM General a contract extension worth $98.7 million to continue producing Humvees (HMMWVs). The extension brings the total value of the existing Humvee contract to more than $3.2 billion and allows the Army to place orders up to a ceiling price until at least 28 August 2027.

The move comes as the newer Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program faces production delays, prompting the service to maintain purchases of the older, proven vehicle. While the Army aims to gradually phase out the Humvee and shift funding toward drones and more agile combat units, international demand ensures the Humvee remains in service worldwide.

The contract, awarded by the Army Contracting Command in Michigan on a sole‑source basis, reflects the lack of a ready alternative supplier and the vehicle’s longstanding role in US military logistics for over four decades.
