US Army Humvee procurement amid JLTV delays
Entities: United States Army · Humvee (HMMWV) · Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) A2 · Poland · AM General
Overview
In late July 2026 the U.S. Army announced two successive contract actions with AM General to keep the aging Humvee (HMMWV) fleet operational while the newer Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program remains stalled. On 23 July the Army extended its existing Humvee production contract with a $98.7 million amendment, allowing orders through August 2027 and bringing the total contract value above $3.2 billion. Four days later, on 27 July, a separate $99 million modification was awarded for upgrading the Humvee fleet. Both moves underscore the service’s reliance on the proven platform as JLTV A2 delays exceed 20 months and threaten FY 2027 funding, prompting continued investment in the legacy vehicle despite plans to eventually phase it out.
