US Army to begin fielding Sig Sauer M8 carbine in December

The US Army is scheduled to begin fielding the Sig Sauer M8 Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) carbine this December. Units stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will be among the first to receive the new equipment.

The M8 is designed to replace the M7 rifle and incorporates design changes based on soldier feedback, including a shorter barrel, a fixed stock, and a more rigid handguard. Sig Sauer officials noted that the M8 is more than a pound lighter than its predecessor.

This rollout is part of a broader program that includes the M250 machine gun, which is intended to replace the M249 and is expected to reach troops in the first half of 2027. Both the M8 and M250 utilize the 6.8x51mm Common Cartridge, a hybrid-design ammunition developed by Sig Sauer to withstand higher chamber pressures.
