US bombings in Iran cause around 1,700 civilian deaths

A New York Times analysis estimates that U.S. air strikes on Iran have killed roughly 1,700 civilians, including 175 children in a school in Minab after Tomahawk missiles struck on 28 February. Additional attacks hit a sports hall, another school and residential areas, adding 21 more deaths. The United States has suffered at least 18 military fatalities and the war effort is estimated to have cost $37.5 billion.

President Donald Trump announced a pause to the campaign, citing ammunition concerns and a desire to give diplomacy a chance, while negotiations over a framework to reopen the Strait of Hormuz continued. The conflict has also driven global oil prices higher as the Hormuz Strait, a key oil‑shipping lane, remains threatened.
