U.S. birth tourism crackdown leads to mass visa cancellations
The United States has intensified its crackdown on birth tourism following an executive order signed by Donald Trump on August 6, 2026. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the creation of a Task Force for the Prevention of Birth Tourism, aimed at dismantling networks that facilitate foreign nationals obtaining U.S. citizenship for their children through fraudulent visa use. Rubio stated that the task force has already revoked over 600 visas globally within its first month.
In the border region between Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents have increased inspections and are issuing warnings to travelers regarding potential immigration consequences. Immigration lawyer Arturo Vázquez has documented at least 94 cases in Ciudad Juárez where parents had their visas canceled after having children born in the United States.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is preparing a federal lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of these visa cancellations. The legal challenge seeks a judicial injunction to stop the practice and potentially restore canceled visas to those affected without requiring new applications or fees.
