US cattle and hog futures climb as supply cues and USDA screwworm response lift markets
Live and feeder cattle futures rose on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, supported by technical levels and tight ready‑supply. August live cattle closed $2.07 higher at $243.25, and October live cattle gained $3.00 to $236.80. Feeder cattle also posted gains, with August feeder cattle up $4.12 to $361.55 and September feeder cattle up $4.97 to $359.52. The USDA noted good demand and average‑to‑attractive quality in feeder cattle.
Hog futures edged higher as pork carcass prices rebounded. July lean hogs settled 0.825 cent higher at $97.45 per pound, and the USDA priced pork carcasses at $97.39 per cwt, up $2.92. Beef futures slipped following the closure of a JBS plant in Souderton, Pennsylvania, and USDA choice beef cuts fell $1.28 per cwt. The USDA also reported nine domestic New World screwworm cases, including an infestation in a Texas calf, and is accelerating drug development and grant funding to combat the parasite.
