US citizen captured in Sonora on fentanyl trafficking warrant

Mexican authorities in Hermosillo, Sonora, arrested a 41‑year‑old U.S. citizen identified as Steven "N" who faces a federal arrest warrant from the Southern District of Florida for conspiracy to distribute and possess fentanyl with intent to distribute. The operation was a joint effort between Mexico’s Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC), the Agencia Ministerial de Investigación Criminal (AMIC) and U.S. agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service and U.S. Border Patrol.

After his capture, the suspect was turned over to the Instituto Nacional de Migración, processed for deportation, and handed to U.S. Marshals for transfer back to the United States to face trial. The arrest follows earlier instances of bin‑binational cooperation, such as the 2025 detention of another U.S. national in Sonora for similar fentanyl‑related charges.

Mexican officials said the case underscores ongoing coordination between the two countries to target organized crime and synthetic drug trafficking.
