US citizen detained in Bogotá not accused of child sexual abuse, says President Petro

A United States citizen was detained in the north of Bogotá after a neighbor reported a possible abuse of a minor. Police say the man was caring for three children through an adoption process and that the incident began when he took one child to a balcony because the child was choking. Initial witness footage was interpreted as a possible assault, prompting the police operation.

President Gustavo Petro stated that early investigative findings show "no existen evidencias de abuso sexual" and called for respect of the detained individual's legal guarantees while the inquiry continues. The three children have been placed under protection and are receiving specialised care while authorities work to clarify all circumstances of the case.
