Colombia security crackdown intensifies July 2026
Overview
Throughout July 2026 Colombia’s nationwide security drive has been tested by a wave of violent crime and organized‑crime activity. In Padilla, Cauca, residents on 14 July protested a surge of robberies, assaults and general insecurity, demanding more police and a clear security plan. In the north‑eastern province of Ocaña, firearm‑related homicides rose sharply, prompting the mayor to request a special police district, security cameras and reinforced deployments. The violence in Cauca continued: on 15 July four people, including community‑action board president Yenny Guaina Baltazar and her husband, were shot dead in Argelia, an attack linked to groups such as Frente Carlos Patiño, Frente Diomer Cortés and the ELN. In the same operation, Gaula forces and DIJIN captured John Heider Mestizo (“Sombra”), the finance chief of the Dagoberto Ramos criminal network, and his aide alias Alexis, striking a blow against illicit revenue streams. At José María Córdova International Airport, migration officials denied entry to six U.S. citizens suspected of sexual‑exploitation tourism, raising the yearly total to nearly 140.
New developments highlight an expanding crisis. Early‑warning systems that flagged a deteriorating security picture in the Bucaramanga metropolitan area five years ago have gone unheeded; a fresh alert now warns of expanding illegal mining and the arrival of new armed actors. In the Atlántico department, 670 homicides were recorded in the first half of 2026, making it the third‑most lethal department after Valle del Cauca and Antioquia, with gangs such as “Los Costeños”, “Los Pepes” and “Nueva Generación” intensifying extortion and forcing businesses and schools to close. In Pasto, reckless traffic violations, a rise in market robberies at Potrerillo and aggressive begging around Plaza de Nariño have spurred calls for greater police presence to restore public safety.
