U.S. Coast Guard rescues 37 migrants off Channel Islands

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 37 migrants from a 30-foot recreational vessel drifting approximately 88 miles southwest of Channel Islands Harbor. The group had been without food, water, or fuel for two days and lacked personal safety equipment.

Following a radio notification received at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Friday, August 28, multiple Coast Guard assets were diverted to the location, including crews from the cutters Sockeye and Halibut, as well as personnel from several stations and an aircraft. The vessel was located and boarded around 8:30 p.m.

After being rescued, the individuals were transported to the Coast Guard Base Los Angeles-Long Beach and subsequently transferred to U.S. Border Patrol personnel for deportation proceedings.
