U.S. Congress members demand answers over Brazil ambassador's visa revocation
Twelve members of the United States Congress have sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanding explanations regarding the revocation of the diplomatic visa of Brazil's Ambassador to the United States, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. Led by Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove, co-chair of the Brazil Caucus, the group characterized the incident as an “extraordinary and unprecedented” measure and a “fabricated diplomatic dispute” by the State Department.
The signatories, which include House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks, expressed concern that the decision marks an escalation in tensions between Washington and Brasília. The letter suggests these actions are part of a broader pattern by the Trump administration that could disrupt relations with Brazil, the largest economy and democracy in South America. Specific points of friction cited include 50% tariffs imposed on Brazil and sanctions against a Brazilian Supreme Court justice.
Furthermore, the congressmen alleged that the visa revocation represents a “sustained effort by the Trump Administration to influence the results of the 2026 Brazilian elections.” The document, dated October 6, requires a written response from the State Department by October 20, 2026.
