U.S. Congress members propose legislation regarding Serbia

U.S. Congress members Joe Wilson and William Keating have introduced a proposed law regarding Serbia that criticizes the current administration for undermining democracy and maintaining close ties with Russia, China, and Iran. The legislation, currently in its early stages, suggests that the United States should consider suspending its strategic dialogue with Belgrade if certain conditions are not met.

The proposed document calls on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to pressure Belgrade to ensure free and fair elections, strengthen anti-corruption efforts, and uphold the rule of law. Specifically, lawmakers demand an independent and transparent investigation into the tragedy in Novi Sad involving a canopy collapse that killed 16 people, as well as accountability regarding the use of force against demonstrators.

While the U.S. government opened a strategic dialogue with Belgrade in mid-July, these legislative efforts signal potential friction. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced elections for late October and has previously rejected claims that the government is obstructing democratic processes.
