U.S. legislative pressure on Serbia

U.S. lawmakers Joe Wilson and Bill Keating have introduced bipartisan legislation targeting the Serbian administration under President Aleksandar Vučić. The proposed measures aim to increase pressure on Belgrade by suggesting sanctions and visa bans for individuals perceived to be undermining democratic processes, peace, and stability in the Western Balkans.

The legislative push follows domestic unrest in Serbia, including protests against corruption and government mismanagement. Lawmakers have specifically called for independent investigations into a November 2024 canopy collapse at a Novi Sad railway station that resulted in 16 deaths, as well as accountability for the use of force against demonstrators.

Furthermore, the legislation criticizes Serbia’s close ties with Russia, China, and Iran. It urges the U.S. Secretary of State to pressure Belgrade to ensure free and fair elections and uphold the rule of law, even suggesting the potential suspension of strategic dialogue between the two nations if specific conditions are not met. While the U.S. government recently opened a strategic dialogue with Belgrade, these legislative efforts indicate growing diplomatic friction. President Vučić has scheduled elections for late October and has denied claims that his government is obstructing democratic processes.
