US consumers face financial pressure and shifting payment preferences
Recent reports highlight significant financial pressures and shifting payment preferences among American consumers. According to the 2026 ACI Speedpay Pulse Report, nearly 60% of US adults cannot cover a $1,000 emergency expense. This includes approximately half of Gen Z and Millennial consumers, and 40% of Gen X. The study notes that two in three Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, driving a demand for greater control, flexibility, and predictability in bill payment services.
Simultaneously, payment technology is becoming a critical factor in retail success, particularly with younger demographics. A report from PYMNTS Intelligence, produced in collaboration with PayPal, reveals that 28% of Gen Z shoppers abandoned online shopping carts in the previous month because digital wallets were not accepted. This rate is significantly higher than for Millennials (18%), Gen X (10%), and Baby Boomers (3.9%). Among Gen Z consumers who use digital wallets, 48% stated they would switch merchants or abandon a transaction if their preferred wallet was unavailable at checkout.
