US Consumers Shift to Versatile Ingredients and Meal Planning Apps

A recent survey of 2,000 American shoppers found that rising grocery prices are prompting more home cooking and a focus on ingredients that can be used across multiple meals. Sixty percent of respondents said meat and poultry dominate their grocery spend, while potatoes emerged as the top versatile staple, with 40% of shoppers viewing them as a cost‑effective way to stretch their budget. Jamey Higham, president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission, noted that shoppers are seeking foods that "do more with less."

In parallel, a review of 15 meal‑planning applications highlighted the growing role of AI‑driven tools in helping consumers streamline menu creation, generate grocery lists, and reduce time spent on food preparation. The evaluated apps were judged on features such as automated list generation, macro‑goal customization, and real‑time adaptation to dietary needs, offering a digital solution to the same budget‑driven cooking trends identified in the survey.
