U.S. container imports projected to peak in September

U.S. container import volumes are projected to peak in September, potentially making it the busiest month of the year for major container ports. According to the Global Port Tracker report from the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates, September is forecast to reach 2.31 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU), a 9.6 percent increase year-over-year.

Industry experts note that the extended peak season is driven by strong consumer demand despite challenges such as inflation, tariffs, and high fuel prices. Logistics hurdles have contributed to the timing of these imports, including vessel delays caused by bad weather in China and rerouting away from the Panama Canal due to potential drought conditions.

While July saw 2.3 million TEU handled—a 3.9 percent decrease from the previous year—the upcoming months show an upward trend. Following the September peak, cargo volume is expected to decrease to 2.11 million TEU in October, though this remains 1.7 percent higher than the previous year.
