U.S. Corn and Soybean Markets Face Mixed Outlook Ahead of USDA Crop Reports

A cool, unsettled week with below‑seasonal temperatures and frequent showers has slowed growth of field corn and soybeans, creating challenges for crop‑protection timing. Most acreage is planted and early‑season growth is good, but crops are in a critical weed‑free period and nutrient deficiencies (nitrogen, potassium, sulphur) have emerged; recent rains are expected to improve nutrient uptake. The Crop Protection Network forecasts a 98% risk of tar‑spot disease on corn over the next 14 days, while armyworm feeding and other pests are being monitored in cereals and beans.

Commodity markets are mixed as soybeans close the week with modest gains and corn finishes lower, reflecting expectations of rain followed by a heat dome that could stress corn during pollination. Traders remain optimistic about Chinese demand, though no new sales were reported. Brazil maintains a price advantage and has raised its production and export outlook, while France reports 76% of its corn crop in good to excellent condition, down from the previous week due to weather stress. The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition numbers are due Monday, with further supply‑demand updates scheduled for July 10 and July 14.
