U.S. corporations receive billions in tariff refunds following Supreme Court ruling
Following a February 2026 Supreme Court ruling that declared sweeping tariffs implemented in 2025 unlawful, the U.S. government has begun issuing massive tariff refunds to corporations.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has accepted approximately $128.7 billion in refund applications. Over 40 S&P 500 companies have reported roughly $9.6 billion in refunds, providing a significant one-off boost to earnings. Major recipients include Apple, which reported nearly $2.2 billion, Nike with $986 million, FedEx with $800 million, Amazon with $640 million, and General Motors with $500 million.
While the refunds are flowing to companies, the impact on consumers varies. Shippers like FedEx and UPS have begun passing some refunds directly to customers. Amazon has also announced plans to return a portion of refunds to consumers. However, many other corporations are opting to retain the credits as profit or promising future price reductions rather than direct reimbursements for past costs. This follows a period where tariffs reportedly increased the average U.S. household tax burden by $1,000 in 2025.
