The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in February 2026 that tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unlawful. The Trump administration had collected roughly $166 billion in those duties. By the end of July 2026 the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries (CAPE) system had completed refunds of about $100 billion – roughly 60 % of the total – and sent the funds to the Treasury for disbursement.

The CAPE portal recorded 252,496 refund claims covering more than 25 million import entries. Approximately $128.68 billion in potential and certified refunds have been accepted for processing. About $29 billion remain under review and $1.6 billion are blocked because importers have not supplied required banking details.

Major corporations have received large payouts: Apple $2.2 billion, Amazon $600 million, Walmart $2.4 billion and Nike $300 million. Critics note that consumers have seen little direct benefit. Canadian exporters are slated to receive roughly $10 billion in refunds. The administration continues to pursue new tariffs under other legal authorities.
