U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials seized 2,250 cartons of counterfeit Camel cigarettes at Washington Dulles International Airport. The shipment, which was destined for Miami, originated in Singapore and traveled through Japan.

Authorities flagged the shipment due to suspicious markings, unusual logo designs, and a circuitous shipping route. The total value of the counterfeit goods, if they had been authentic, is estimated at $404,842. Following an investigation by trade experts and confirmation from the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, the shipment was formally seized on August 14.

Christine Ward, the Area Port Director for Washington, stated that counterfeit cigarettes pose significant health risks to consumers and cause substantial tax revenue losses for the United States. Officials noted that such illicit trade can also benefit international criminal organizations.
