U.S. Customs enforcement of counterfeit and illicit goods
Overview
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has conducted several enforcement actions at major airports involving the seizure of undeclared currency and counterfeit merchandise.
In early August, CBP reported the arrest of a traveler at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport for failing to declare more than $53,800 in U.S. currency. Additionally, officers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport seized nearly $4 million in counterfeit luxury goods, including apparel and accessories, many of which originated from China. Authorities noted that counterfeit trade is frequently utilized by organized crime to facilitate trade-based money laundering.
Later in the month, CBP officials at Washington Dulles International Airport seized 2,250 cartons of counterfeit Camel cigarettes. The shipment, valued at approximately $404,842, had traveled from Singapore through Japan before being destined for Miami. Area Port Director Christine Ward noted that such illicit trade poses health risks to consumers and results in significant tax revenue losses.
