Taylor Farms lettuce recall amid U.S. cyclospora outbreak
A multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis, caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, has sickened more than 16,000 people across 40 + U.S. states. Federal investigators counted 1,947 illnesses linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations, and overall case counts exceed 4,100 confirmed infections with dozens of additional cases under analysis. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration traced a major cluster to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms grown in central Mexico and issued a voluntary recall on July 17, 2026. The recall affected restaurants, food‑service distributors and some grocery stores, including select Walmart Marketside‑brand products. Separate investigations have also linked cases to parsley, cilantro and other leafy greens.
Health officials say the outbreak is still evolving. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports cases in 34‑41 states, with Florida seeing about 60 confirmed infections. Michigan, the current hotspot, may have passed its peak, though experts caution that reporting delays and limited testing could mask ongoing spread. Consumer surveys show roughly 40 % of Americans are buying or eating less fresh fruit and vegetables because of the outbreak.
Federal agencies continue to expand testing to nine states and urge the public to avoid the recalled lettuce, wash produce thoroughly, and seek medical care if symptoms such as explosive watery diarrhea, nausea, fatigue or fever develop.
