US Defense Department Restores Pacific Command Name, Dropping Indo‑Pacific Label

On 17 June, the US Department of Defense announced that the Indo‑Pacific Command would revert to its original designation, Pacific Command (PACOM). The Pentagon cited “institutional memory” and the command’s historic roots dating back to its 1947 creation, while affirming that its operational boundaries—from the US West Coast to India’s western border—remain unchanged.

The name change follows the 2018 redesignation under the Trump administration, which introduced the “Indo‑Pacific” concept to reinforce the “Free and Open Indo‑Pacific” strategy and the Quad alliance with Japan, India and Australia. Analysts suggest the reversal may signal a shift toward a more US‑centric focus, aligning with a new National Defence Strategy that emphasizes protecting the US homeland and its Atlantic‑Pacific flanking oceans. Others view it as a simple historical nod or internal branding move. The decision is being read by allies and rivals alike as an adjustment in how Washington frames the strategic importance of South Asia and India within its broader regional outlook.
