U.S. establishes task force to combat birth tourism; 600 visas revoked
The Trump administration has launched a new Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force to combat visa abuses and protect the integrity of the U.S. immigration system. Led by the State Department in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, the task force is designed to identify, investigate, and sanction foreign nationals who use nonimmigrant visas primarily to travel to the United States to give birth and secure citizenship for their children.
To date, the initiative has resulted in the revocation of more than 600 visas. Authorities are specifically targeting organized networks that facilitate birth tourism by offering commercial packages, which may include travel arrangements, medical services, and assistance with visa interviews. The administration has noted that some facilitators use fraudulent documents or instruct clients to misrepresent their travel purposes to bypass immigration controls.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the administration is committed to dismantling these networks, which he described as profiting from the exploitation of American laws. The task force will continue to review the travel histories and activities of visa holders worldwide to detect patterns of fraud and ensure that visitor visas are not being misused for the purpose of obtaining birthright citizenship.
