US diesel shortages threaten global energy security

The United States, a leading global oil producer and diesel exporter, is facing significant diesel shortages, leading to discussions regarding potential export bans. This domestic pressure, driven by rising consumer costs during an election period, is prompting political moves such as pressure on G7 partners to release strategic reserves and potential unilateral easing of sanctions on Russian diesel in exchange for increased global supply.

Expert Christof Rüel of Columbia University warns that such individual state policies, while appearing rational domestically, may weaken collective energy security and accelerate global economic fragmentation. Because diesel is a critical tool for transport, shortages and price spikes—which have risen at twice the rate of gasoline since July—directly impact production costs and fuel inflation. This volatility is exacerbated by damaged refining capacities resulting from conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
