U.S. Documents Detail 1963 UFO Investigation in Brazil's Bahia
Declassified U.S. government records released in August 2026 show that American agencies investigated a 1963 report of a large metallic sphere that allegedly crashed in the town of Conde, Bahia, Brazil. The story originated from a Radio Tupi broadcast on 8 November 1963 describing a "great metallic sphere" that opened a four‑metre crater and contained a human‑like occupant in a heavy suit with indecipherable markings.
The CIA, the State Department, the Department of Defense and NASA were notified, and the U.S. embassy in Rio de Janeiro and the consulate in Salvador sought verification. Consul Harold Midkiff, after consulting local sources, concluded the account was fabricated in Rio and that no witnesses had seen any object. Brazilian authorities, including the Ministry of Aeronautics, also denied the existence of any such object.
The investigation found no evidence to support the claim, and the case was dismissed as a hoax. The documents are part of the fifth batch of UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) files released by the U.S. government.
