U.S. DOE Picks Five States for Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses

The U.S. Department of Energy announced five finalist states—Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Idaho—to host Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. The campuses are intended to support the full nuclear fuel cycle, including fuel fabrication, enrichment, reprocessing and disposal of used nuclear fuel, and may also host advanced reactors, power generation and data centers.

The projects are projected to draw up to $50 billion in private investment, generate as much as $10 billion in state and local tax revenue and create up to 25,000 high‑paying jobs. As part of the initiative, the states have agreed to accept nuclear waste in exchange for federal assistance to develop nuclear energy, addressing more than 95,000 metric tons of spent fuel currently stored nationwide. Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the campuses as “massive generators of economic growth” and a key step in a broader effort to revive America’s domestic nuclear industry under the Trump administration’s policy direction.
