US nuclear innovation campus rollout

In late July 2026 the U.S. Department of Energy announced a new program to create “nuclear lifecycle innovation campuses” that would combine permanent spent‑fuel storage with facilities for uranium enrichment, fuel reprocessing, advanced reactor deployment, power generation and even nuclear‑powered data centers. An initial announcement named Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Idaho as the first states to be considered as hosts.

Two days later the DOE confirmed those same five states—Idaho, Utah, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee—as the final contenders. Officials highlighted the projects’ potential to attract up to $50 billion in private investment, generate about 25,000 high‑paying jobs and produce roughly $10 billion in state and local tax revenue, with federal loans available for eligible work. Energy Secretary Chris Wright framed the campuses as a catalyst for “America’s nuclear renaissance” and an alternative to the stalled Yucca Mountain repository, emphasizing voluntary state participation and community consent.

The selected states, each home to major nuclear research facilities such as the Idaho National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are positioning the campuses to revive domestic nuclear‑fuel‑cycle capabilities and stimulate regional economies.
