Mexico and Argentina face shifting currency trends as peso strengthens and dollar rises
Latin American markets experienced significant currency fluctuations in late August and early September 2026. In Mexico, the peso showed notable strength, appreciating 5.6% against the US dollar between January and August. This appreciation, partly driven by carry trade operations, saw the exchange rate close August at approximately 16.99 pesos per dollar, despite brief periods of volatility where it touched the 17-peso threshold.
In Argentina, the US dollar continued its upward trend, with the wholesale rate consolidating above 1,500 pesos. The Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) reported its lowest monthly dollar purchases of the year in August, totaling US$ 768 million, a 65% decrease from July. Despite this slowdown, the BCRA's total annual purchases reached US$ 14,095 million, and international reserves stood at US$ 48,257 million.
Meanwhile, Colombia saw an upward trend in the US dollar, reaching 3,202.768 pesos on Monday. These regional shifts reflect a complex interplay of interest rate differentials, global economic uncertainty, and local central bank interventions.
