US economic pressure on Iran sparks diplomatic responses from China and Oman

The United States is escalating economic pressure on Iran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaling a massive financial offensive described as an ‘economic D-Day.’ This strategy aims to isolate Tehran by targeting its financial lifelines, though analysts note that success likely requires targeting Chinese banks that facilitate Iranian oil trades—a move that could significantly strain US-China relations.

In response, Iranian officials have criticized the move. Kazem Gharibabadi, an assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister, questioned whether the massive mobilization of US financial resources constitutes a victory or an admission of American defeat. Meanwhile, China has reaffirmed its commitment to bilateral cooperation, with Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Miao Di meeting his Iranian counterpart in Beijing to discuss regional coordination and sovereignty.

Concurrently, Oman is attempting to mediate regional stability. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi visited Tehran to discuss securing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Omani officials emphasized the need to protect global supply chains and maintain the strait as a free waterway to prevent escalation between the US and Iran.
