US Embassy in London faces scrutiny over democracy interference claims

The United States Embassy in London has launched a grant program titled “Liberty Under Law: The Shared Anglo-American Tradition,” offering up to $500,000 for public education and civic engagement projects. The initiative aims to promote a "national discussion" regarding shared values and the common law tradition, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the Magna Carta monument unveiling.

However, the program has faced accusations of interfering in British democracy. Critics and politicians suggest the initiative seeks to export MAGA-aligned ideologies to the United Kingdom by prioritizing themes such as "freedom of expression" and "limited regulation."

Leaked documents reported by The Guardian indicate that the U.S. State Department also intends to allocate approximately $12 million in subsidies to various British organizations, including those founded by prominent conservatives Jacob Rees-Mogg and Toby Young. Opponents argue these funds represent a broader strategy to influence British public discourse in favor of populist policies.
