US-UK diplomatic tension over embassy grant program

The United States Embassy in London launched a grant program titled ‘Liberty Under Law: The Shared Anglo-American Tradition,’ offering up to $500,000 for projects focused on public education, civic engagement, and shared legal traditions. The initiative has drawn criticism from British politicians and observers who allege the program constitutes interference in domestic democracy. Critics suggest the funding aims to promote specific ideologies, with one Member of Parliament characterizing the grants as ‘Trump’s MAGA money meddling in democracy.’

Leaked reports indicated that the U.S. State Department intended to allocate approximately $12 million in subsidies to various British organizations, including those linked to prominent conservatives.

In response to the backlash, the U.S. Embassy defended the program by noting that previous grants focused on ‘climate justice,’ LGBTQ activism, and race-based hiring did not face similar opposition. The Embassy stated it has discontinued spending on those types of projects. Meanwhile, Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, described the current state of free speech in the United Kingdom as a ‘true free speech disaster.’
