US Embassies Urge Americans to Leave Middle East Amid Rising Tensions
The U.S. State Department issued new security alerts on 1 August 2026 for American citizens in the Middle East, warning of possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and other travel disruptions. U.S. embassies in Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates urged Americans to consider departing the region or to prepare for evacuation, noting that Iran and groups supporting Iran could target U.S. interests worldwide.
The alerts came after President Donald Trump posted that the United States would pause any new strikes against Iran, following a memorandum of understanding signed in June to negotiate an end to Iran’s nuclear programme. The deal was later abandoned after Iran launched attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting renewed U.S. strikes in July. In related incidents, a drone struck a U.S. gas vessel in Egypt, and an unidentified projectile hit a tanker off Oman, heightening concerns about regional security.
U.S. officials advised citizens outside the Middle East to reconsider travel to or through the region and to monitor updates from airlines and diplomatic missions.
