US energy storage market hits record 18.9 GWh in Q2 2026

The United States energy storage market reached a record 18.9 GWh in the second quarter of 2026, according to a report by Wood Mackenzie. While installed power capacity saw a 7% year-over-year decline, growth was driven by residential systems and longer-duration utility-scale projects. Average storage duration increased from 2.8 hours to 3.5 hours during this period.

Residential installations grew 3% year-over-year, with California, Texas, Puerto Rico, Arizona, and Illinois accounting for 88% of the quarter's residential activity. The national storage attachment rate rose to 46%.

Looking ahead, the U.S. market is projected to reach 207 GW/715 GWh of installed capacity by 2031. Although installations may stagnate in 2026 and 2027 due to supply chain dynamics, an 11% average annual growth rate is expected through 2031 as domestic cell manufacturing expands.
